Description
Ceiling Lighting · Handwoven Bamboo
A hat woven for shade, now woven for light
For centuries Japanese farmers wore the kasa – a wide woven hat that broke the sun into soft, moving shade. Kasa is that same shape turned upward and lit from within. Hundreds of fine bamboo spokes, bound by hand in three stepped tiers, so the light never hits you flat. It scatters across your ceiling in a slow radial pattern and fills the room the way late afternoon does.
Most ceiling lights look like they came out of a warehouse catalogue
You can spend an entire weekend getting a room right – the wall colour, the oak, the linen, the one good ceramic – and then hang a flat white disc above it that undoes the whole thing. Ceiling lights are the last thing people choose and the first thing that flattens a room, because a bare bulb behind frosted plastic throws hard, even, characterless light. Kasa does the opposite. The weave breaks the light before it reaches you, so the room gets warmth and texture instead of glare, and the fixture itself is worth looking at with the switch off.

The piece
Built the slow way
A bamboo shade can be pressed in a mould in minutes, and you can tell – the strands sit flat and the pattern repeats. Kasa is bound strand by strand over a welded iron frame, in three stepped tiers that step down toward the centre. That construction is what gives it depth from below and a clean, almost architectural silhouette from across the room.
Woven strand by strand✓ Three stepped tiers ✓ Iron frame beneath
Light you can sit under✓ No glare ✓ Pattern on the ceiling
Two sizes, two mounts✓ 60cm and 80cm ✓ Flush or cord
Where it earns its place
Low over the dining table, where people linger
Above the island, so the whole counter is lit
In the living room, as the shape that anchors it
Why people keep it
Three reasons it outlasts a trend
Bamboo and iron age gently and read as warm from the first day. Nothing about it yellows, peels or starts to look like plastic.
Off, it is a woven sculpture catching daylight. On, it becomes the warmest thing in the room. Two different pieces in one fitting.
Japandi, coastal, farmhouse, plain modern – natural bamboo sits quietly with all of them, which is why it does not date.

Good to know
Which size should I choose?
As a rule, the shade should be roughly half to two thirds the width of what sits beneath it. Over a 1.2m table or in a bedroom, 60cm looks right. Over a kitchen island, a long dining table, or in an open-plan room with high ceilings, choose 80cm – in a big space the smaller one reads as an afterthought.
What is the difference between the ceiling mount and the chandelier version?
The ceiling mount sits close to the ceiling, which is the safer choice for rooms under about 2.6m or for hallways where people walk beneath it. The chandelier version hangs on an adjustable cord so you can drop it low over a table, which is where this shape looks its best. Same shade, same weave – only the fitting changes.
Does it give enough light for a whole room?
It comfortably lights 15 to 30 square metres. Because the weave diffuses rather than blocks, the spread is wide and soft rather than a single bright pool. For a large open-plan space, two 60cm pieces spaced along the room often work better than one 80cm.
Is bamboo going to look cheap up close?
This is the honest worry with woven shades, and it is why we chose this one. It is bound by hand over an iron frame rather than pressed in a mould, so the spokes have real depth and the edge is finished with a woven binding ring. Up close you see the craft; from across the room you see the silhouette.
How do I keep it clean?
Dust it with a soft brush or the brush attachment of a vacuum on low, working outward along the spokes. Don’t wet it – bamboo doesn’t need it, and water can mark the natural finish over time.
Is it hard to install?
It’s a standard hardwired ceiling fitting – the same job as replacing any pendant, and all mounting hardware and instructions are in the box. It is light for its size, so it mounts to a normal ceiling box. If you’re not comfortable working with mains wiring, any electrician will fit it in a few minutes.

Looks nice, but the bulb that comes with it is pretty weak. Also, the shade is a bit bigger than I expected. But the quality is decent for the price.

Good light for the money. The bamboo looks nice, but the screws for the mount are a bit fiddly. Took me a while to set up. But once it’s up, it’s great.

Solid construction, the iron frame feels sturdy. Installation was straightforward, though the included bulb is a bit dim for my taste — swapped it out for a brighter one. Still, great value.
Owen Murphy (verified owner) –
The design is unique and the light is warm. Took about 30 minutes to install. No complaints.
Alicia García (verified owner) –
Nice light, but the cord could be longer. Also, the included bulb is a bit cool-toned for my liking. But the design is lovely.
Lucas Müller (verified owner) –
Solid build quality. The iron frame is heavy and feels durable. The light itself is lovely. Only downside is that the cord is white and a bit visible against our dark ceiling.

Bought this as a gift for my sister who loves Japanese decor. She was thrilled! Said it’s the best gift she’s gotten in ages. The packaging was nice too.
Diego Fernández (verified owner) –
I was worried the bamboo might look cheap in person, but it’s actually really well made. The three tiers give a nice layered effect. Only minor thing: the cord is a bit short if you have high ceilings.

Maya Singh (verified owner) –
I was a bit nervous about the size, but it fits perfectly over our dining table. The light is gorgeous and exactly as pictured.

Laura Schmidt (verified owner) –
Absolutely love this light! It’s exactly what I wanted for my bohemian-style living room. The warm glow is perfect.
Daniel Cohen (verified owner) –
The light is well-made and looks great. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because the screws were a bit short for my ceiling. But that’s a minor issue.

The design is nice, but I wish the bamboo were a bit more uniform in color. Some strips are lighter than others, but it’s not too noticeable when lit.
Priya Nair (verified owner) –
We hung this over the kitchen island and it’s become the focal point of the whole room. Everyone who visits asks about it. The bamboo has a lovely natural scent too, but it fades after a few days.
